Values for a Successful Business: Hard-working and able to take a calculated risk
Michigan Business Broker founder Nadir Jiddou has been buying and selling businesses for more than 18 years in Michigan, but it didn’t start out that way.
“I went to Wayne State for engineering… my dad was an engineer, and I was good at math and science and all that fun stuff, but it just wasn’t for me.”
When he was a sophomore, a cousin asked if he wanted to buy a pizza place with him. He jumped at the opportunity to use his calculating brain as an entrepreneur.
It’s the kind of “calculated risk” Nadir considers vital today to successful business ownership. That, and hard work is something he’s very familiar with.
While continuing to go to college, Nadir not only ran that pizza place but ended up running five of them, all Cottage Inns.
Adding to his already ambitious repertoire, he started and ran a fish and chicken place, as well, and took on ownership and management of an assisted living facility.
“It was kind of a crazy time in my brain.”
It was at this time that Nadir decided to become a business broker.
“Really, I was just looking for another business for myself, and a friend of mine had a brokerage. I went to work for him for a little bit and saw what it was like being a business broker,” he said.
He created Michigan Business Broker at this point and has been continuing to build it for the last seven years, but not without shifting his focus again when the opportunity presented itself.
“I realized I couldn’t do all these things at once. I didn’t have the right people or structure in place, so I sold off all my Cottage Inns, the assisted living place, then I sold my fish and chicken place and just focused on this solely.”
It was a risk that has paid off for him and Michigan business sellers and buyers.
Today, Nadir says there are no “favorite” businesses he enjoys buying and selling over others.
“Honestly, it’s not the business; it ends up being the people.”
At the end of the day, Nadir says that a business is just a business, and it’s working with passionate and dedicated people who want to take on advantageous ventures that makes the difference.
“Whether it’s the buyer, seller, banker, title company, or just the people you’re working with in general, that’s a great deal to work on.”
